Do You Know Where You’re Going?

RoadMap

Have you ever been lost? Have you ever been driving somewhere, without a GPS system or a map, and realized that you didn’t know where you were going? Maybe you were still going 60 mph, but you had no idea if you were heading in the right direction?

Sometimes our lives can be like that too. We find ourselves going full speed ahead, working hard and striving to succeed, only to realize that all of our efforts have been focused in the wrong direction.

We live in a world of endless possibilities and choices. There has never been a time in history where the average person has had more options at their disposal than we do now. All of those options however, can be both a blessing and a curse. Having choices is wonderful, but when there are too many options, we can feel overwhelmed.

How do you handle the opportunities that come your way?

I recently had the opportunity to join a very select group of speakers in a new speakers’ bureau. (A speakers bureau works in a similar way to an agent – handling bookings and marketing a speaker to new clients). This particular opportunity represents an exciting opportunity for me to work with one of my mentors, grow as a speaker and business person, and most importantly, help more people. It aligns perfectly with my long term vision for my business and life. So when I was offered the opportunity, it was a very quick and easy “yes” because I knew that it was exactly where I wanted to be going.

Do YOU know where you want to go? Do you have a clear vision for what you want your life, your career, your family to look like in 1, 5, 10 years from now?

Probably not.

I say that not because I think you are lazy or a bad person. I say that because I’ve done the research. I have asked that question to dozens, maybe hundreds, of audiences of 100-1000 – easily 20,000 people. Overwhelmingly, the majority of people in those audiences do not have a written plan for where they want to be in 1, 5 or 10 years. I’d say the number who do is less than 5%.

If you fall into the 95% who haven’t taken the time to clearly articulate where you want to be in 1, 5, and 10 years, let today be the day you start.

Having a clear vision for where you want to go is a critical part of ensuring that your life goes in the direction you want it to. Of course there are no guarantees, and you’ll likely hit roadblocks and detours, but you stand a much greater chance of achieving what you want to if you have a clear plan.

Why does having a clear plan matter? It matters because when you don’t know exactly where you want to go, you stand a very small chance of being able to get there. Conversely, when you know exactly where you want to go, and you have a plan for how to get there, your actions become more focused and more effective. Your chances of success increase exponentially.

This week, take an hour to yourself. Find a quiet place with a pen and a few pieces of paper and map out your life.

Articulate where you’d like to see your career, your relationships, your finances and your spiritual life to be. Not only will these descriptions provide inspiration, they will also give you great clues as to what steps you need to take to realize those visions.
