Is There Really a Secret to Success?

Is there a secret to success? Is there a formula, or a path that you can follow that will guarantee results? The good news is, yes, there is. The bad news is, while it is simple, it is not easy.

Do you want to know what it is? Keep reading…

We live in an instant gratification world. Smartphones, microwaves and credit cards are just a few examples of how we have conditioned ourselves to never wait for anything and to expect instant results.

It wasn’t that long ago that when people wanted to buy something they actually saved the money ahead of time before they bought it. Now it is far more common to buy now and pay later. In 1984, the average household in Canada was $46,000 in debt.

Today, just 33 years later, that number has tripled. There are certainly a variety of factors at play in this statistic, but without questions, our instant gratification attitude to life plays a role.

When you want to have it all now, and worry about the consequences later, you set yourself up for inevitable disaster. In the area of finances, the consequences are obvious: if you spend money you don’t have now, by using high interest credit cards for example, you pay – a lot – later. But financially is not the only time this attitude can hurt you.

Health is another obvious manifestation of the dangers of this way of thinking. Is it a coincidence that at the same time our average debt load has increased, the average body weight of North Americans has also seen a dramatic increase? I don’t think so. We eat what we want, when we want it, and figure we’ll worry about the consequences later. We’ll get in shape next year, we think. As a result of this approach to our health, there are now 10% more overweight and obese people in Canada today than there were just 30 years ago.

So what is the secret to solving our debt and weight crisis? It’s the secret to realizing success in any aspect of life. Here is the formula: C + P / T = R, consistency, plus effort, over time, equals results. Consistent effort over time will give you results.

Most people don’t like this formula. They don’t like to hear that the “secret” to success is that there is no secret. That if you want to get results, you have to work for them. They don’t like to hear that the answer to weighing less is to  eat less, move more, and do that for a long time. They don’t like to hear that the way to become wealthy is to spend less, save more, and do that for a long time. But the fact is, that is the ONLY way to succeed at anything. Consistent effort over time produces results. It’s that simple.

So if you aren’t realizing the success that you’d like to see, take a look at which element of the formula you are missing, because it’s in there somewhere. Maybe it’s a question of consistency. Are you doing what you need to do every day, or do you work for a while and then slack off? Or maybe it’s persistence. If you are getting results but they aren’t yet where you want them to be, it’s likely just a matter of continuing on the same road. Finally, sometimes it’s as simple as a matter of effort.

  • Are you working hard enough?
  • Are you putting in the effort needed to succeed?

It’s easy to look at the results of others and overestimate their success and underestimate their effort. The truth is, results require work. If you aren’t getting the results you want, you may have to work harder. So if you aren’t seeing the level of success and results that you want to see in your life, take a look at the formula. Are you doing C, P and E?
